Carla Magnan, was born in Genoa (Italy), got her diploma in Composition, Piano and Harpsichord at the conservatory of her city. In 2003 she took a diploma in advanced composition at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, under the guidance of Azio Corghi. She also studied at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena (in 2001, under scholarship) and at the Romanini Foundation in Brescia, doing advanced work with Mauro Bonifacio.
Her language comprises both classical forms going back to baroque and the most daring experimental ways of writing "...it is something wise and lovable, ratio and eros will converge to the same extent - there is abandonment - to stay in the modern, in the present, which is given by the melodies that stop themself, get lost and seek ways where the free sound intends to assert its rights" (M. Gamba, press)
She attended instrumental specialization courses on the antique, classical, contemporary and jazz repertoires with famous teachers including Kenneth Gilbert, Massimiliano Damerini and on the composition of film music and cinematographic techniques, with A. Ambrosi, G.Gaslini and C.Savina.
She took part in master classes by J. Harbison in 1998 (Pulitzer Prize in Music), Chester Biscardi in 1999 and Mauricio Kagel in 2002.
For her work as a harpsichordist, she won a scholarship in February 2000, from the European Community for a course of advanced studies in early music at the Accademia Musicale of Saluzzo, where she took a diploma the following August. She also became more active as a pianist and harpsichordist, joining with various chamber groups and dedicating herself not only to Renaissance and the Baroque music, but also to the repertory of twentieth-century.
Winner of various national and international competitions in composition, she has often been mentioned for artistic merit for her work. She has written music and performed for varius associations, soloists, ensemble and orchestras, among which:
the Fìari Ensemble of Turin, Orchestra Milano Classica, the Freon Ensemble of Rome, Contempoartensemble of Florance, Gog – Giovine Orchestra Genovese, the Carlo Felice Foundation, the Domani Musica Ensemble of Rome, the Dedalo Ensemble of Brescia, ORT – Orchestra della Toscana, ...
The Simc (Italian section of the ISCM-International Society for Contemporary Music) has selected some her works for the ISCM World Music Days for Hong Kong (2007), Lituania (2008) and for Belgium (2012). In 2013 she was a finalist at the Earplay Donald Aird Competition (San Francisco, USA).
In 2014 his work “Vortice (di neve)” for solo viola won the competition Nooa Project 2014 by Yuval Gotlibovich (Barcelona, Spain) and in 2016 won the prestigious Portland Chamber Music Festival Composers Competition (Maine, USA) with a piece for piano quartet.

She is also author of dramaturgies and theatrical operas. Intense is the level dramaturgical collaboration with Marco Santagata (finalist of the Strega Prize in 2015) and with actors such as Giovanni Moschella, Clara Galante, Sonia Bergamasco, Compagnia Itineraria, Maria Letizia Gorga, Laura Sicignano, Daniela Duchi, ....
During her activity as a composer she was awarded prizes (al XX° Concorso ICOMS Città di Torino, al I° Concorso Angelo Paccagnini per orchestra, al XXVII e al XXVIII Premio Valentino Bucchi di Roma Capitale, al 32° Concorso Guido d’Arezzo, al II Concorso internazionale di composizione ed esecuzione per strumenti a percussione e batteria Città di Fermo, all’edizione 2006 del concorso internazionale Egidio Carella, Earplay 2013 Aird Competition Winner di San Francisco, ...) and her works are regularly performed by chamber and orchestral groups in prestigious places all over Italy and abroadh. Her works have been published and recorded by Ed. Casa Ricordi – Universal Music Publishing (Milan), Rai Com Edizioni (Rome, Milan), Taukay (Udine) and Sconfinarte (Brescia).
Profitable and very original is her collaboration with the composer Carla Rebora.
Together they wrote “Hymnen” (2004 - six musical images for soprano, guitar, piano, violin and double bass; text extracted and processed from Novali's "Hymnen an die Nacht") and the opera “L'aurea d'amore” (2009 - for soprano, tenor and chamber orchestra; libretto based on the novel "Il copista" by Marco Santagata)
Both works have won the first prize in international competitions with a great audiences and critic success.
The two composers transcribed in 2010 “Un nouveau Petit train de plaisir”, suite for piano duet from the ballet by Azio Corghi, taken from the Péchées de vieillesse of Rossini ( Ricordi - Universal Music Publishing, Milan) and in 2012 wrote “Demo-cracy” (chamber opera for actress, soprano, ensemble, electronics and video) together with the composer Roberta Vacca. In 2014 their Opera buffa “Il salto degli orlandi” for soprano, tenor, baritone and ensemble (text from the novel by Marco Santagata) received an honorable mention at the first special edition of the International Composition Competition "Gabriella Gentili Mian" organized by the Fondazione Teatro Verdi in Pisa (Italy) and reserved for a chamber opera original. The musicologist Renzo Cresti comprehended her in his book "The Languages Of Arts And Music, The Aesthetics Of Beauty, With 64 Testimonies of Important Italian Composers" (edited by Il Molo di Viareggio 2007pag.175, 176) .
Magnan is a playwright too, and founding editor (associate director) of the review of contemporary musical research SuonoSonda.
She is adviser to the artistic direction of Pasquale Anfossi Association of Genoa, which organizes concerts and cultural events in the city and in 2015 celebrated its twenty years of activity
She teaches at the Conservatory “Giuseppe Verdi” of Como (Italy).
